I need help

You can be who you are

Maybe you've known for a long time. Maybe you just found out. Or maybe you don't know yet. You just have a feeling you can't shake. You don't have to prove or explain anything here.

I'm questioning or don't know

You don't have to know anything for certain to be here. You don't have to give yourself a name or label. Sexuality and identity are different for everyone. Doubt is not weakness, it's honesty. Maybe you feel attracted to people of more than one gender. Maybe you don't quite recognise yourself in 'man' or 'woman'. Maybe you just don't know yet. Some people recognise themselves in words like gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, queer, non-binary or transgender; others don't, or not until much later. No label is required.

Coming out & family

Thinking about what to share and with whom is a big personal process. You don't have to do it all at once. On a small island like Bonaire this is extra complex: people know each other and information spreads fast. You decide when you're ready and who you tell. You can start with one trusted person, or wait until you feel safer. There's no 'right way'. You can also just read and look without telling anyone.

When it feels like there is no space

On Bonaire, school, church and family are often one network. If you feel different, it can seem like there is nowhere to belong. That feeling is understandable, and it is not your fault. Some young people think that leaving is the only solution. But there are also people on this island who know you and accept you. You do not have to discover that alone.

Discrimination or bullying

Are you being bullied or discriminated against? That is never your fault, not even when it comes from people you know or trust. What you can do: talk to someone you trust, like a friend or counsellor. Write down what happened: when, what was said or done, who was there. At school you can speak to a trusted adult or counsellor. You don't have to deal with this alone. Bullying hurts. You deserve a safe place.

When home becomes difficult

After a coming out, or when people at home start to suspect something, the atmosphere at home can become heavy. Conflict, silence, pressure or control: it can take many forms. You're not obliged to resolve it all immediately. If home doesn't feel safe, there are people who can help, even if you'd rather it doesn't become widely known. You don't have to sacrifice your safety to belong.

Faith & identity

For many people on Bonaire faith and identity are deeply connected. Maybe you genuinely believe and wonder how that fits with who you are. That question is allowed. You don't have to choose between your faith and yourself. There are people who make room for both. You are not the first person to feel this, and you are not alone.

Trans & non-binary

Whether you know for certain or are still exploring: you are welcome here. You don't have to decide anything to be here. Being transgender means your gender identity doesn't match what was assigned to you at birth. That's not a choice and not a phase. Some people know early; for others it becomes clear later. Both are fine. Does this word feel right for you, or are you still searching? Either is okay.

Intersex

Being intersex means your body naturally doesn't fully fit the medical definition of 'male' or 'female'. This can involve chromosomes, hormones or physical characteristics. Intersex is not a sexual orientation. It's about physical variation. Some people have known this since childhood; others find out later. Whatever you feel (confusion, questions or just curiosity): those feelings are valid.

When things have been difficult for a long time

You don't have to be in an acute crisis to deserve help. If you have been struggling with sadness, anxiety, loneliness or the feeling of not belonging for a while: those are also reasons to talk to someone. You don't need to know exactly what is going on. Mental Health Caribbean (MHC) also offers regular counselling, not only crisis support.

Your rights on Bonaire

Homosexuality is fully legal on Bonaire. Same-sex marriage is legally possible. Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation is prohibited under the Discrimination Protection Act (WBD). Discrimination based on gender identity or expression has less explicit legal protection. Experienced discrimination? You can get free advice from the Lokèt Hurídiko on Bonaire, or file a complaint with the College for Human Rights at mensenrechten.nl.

Note: the phone number 113 (suicide prevention) cannot be reached from Bonaire. Use only the chat at 113.nl.
